Openinkstand Art & Calligraphy

About me

I also enjoy cooking, though my calligraphy is better than my food.

My name is Schin Loong and I am a calligrapher and illustrator in Las Vegas. In the day time I work as a graphic designer and illustrator in a gaming studio, and in the night time I am your friendly neighborhood calligrapher from Openinkstand.

My inspiration comes from opening an ink well (hence the studio name), smelling the ink and feeling the tactile sensation of a dip nib pulling across a sheet of paper. The same tools used by the masters of calligraphy and penmanship for hundreds of years.

The difference between a computer font and handwritten calligraphy is the human element. A computer font can be replicated by anybody with access, but handwritten calligraphy ensures that every word is unique and one of a kind.

When I am not writing, I enjoy playing with my puppy Wuffles, maintaining a small collection of fountain pens, succulents, bad puns, vintage stationery and penmanship specimens. I am a member of IAMPETH (The International Association of Master Penman, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting), was featured in Dasherie Magazine and recently won first place in the World Handwriting Contest (Cursive) in 2013.

My calligraphy has been shown in BRIDES, Uppercase Magazine, Dasherie etc.
Clients include Hasbro, Fantasy Artist Magazine, Advanced Photoshop Magazine, Mohawk Fine Papers and Casa Dragones for iHeartRadio.

You are so inspiring! I’ve dabbled in straight edge calligraphy on and off since I was 14 and am now 36! But your tutorials and advice makes me think that Copperplate and Spencerian might be possible for me too, when it’s always seemed much to difficult until now. It’s taken over 20 years for someone to inspire me to blow the dust off my penholders and nibs, so I think you have a very rare and precious gift to be able to communicate your passion with people. Thank you so much xxx
